No one expects a diagnosis of cancer.

After diagnosis, you may be in shock overwhelmed with fear, betrayal, confusion, sadness and anger.

You need to make major decisions about your life, but how do you get the information that determines your future survival? Which medical professionals should you meet? What must you be sure to ask them?

How do you find trustworthy providers — people you can trust to inform you to make major life decisions — quickly and wisely?

It's not unusual to feel alone and possibly helpless.

I understand your anxiety and upset.
I have been there.

I am a cancer survivor.

I know the process.

I know the players, and I know what to ask.

I can teach you the tools, so you can be your own self-advocate.

I can help you see the positive realities of your situation, focus on what you can do, and what we can continue to do together one step at a time.

In addition, I can provide psychotherapy and health advocacy to you and your family members. I offer assistance with family communication and emotional and practical issues arising from the diagnosis.

This may include further referral for care and support for both patients and their families.LEARN MORE ...

Shoshana Volkas, MFT | Cancer Advocacy Counseling

My Philosophy

As a psychotherapist, my goal is providing clients with effective emotional / cognitive coping skills and support, through an Individual Case Plan.

This allows you to be as informed as possible to make the best decisions for your own care. I provide you with the tools for you and your loved ones to advocate for yourself, and for your needs.

My philosophy is that when faced with adversity, being able to advocate for ourselves in the face of medical bureaucracies, can not only save our lives and help us obtain the best and timeliest access to care, but also empowers us, infuses us with the strength to boost our immune systems, alleviate depression and anxiety, and imbues us with the positive energy required to keep us strong through our cancer journeys.
